Decoding JV – Big Format

Friday 26 September /

Schedule

10:00 - 12:00
13:30 - 15:30

Video games play a major role in our daily lives, from the living room to the classroom, yet it often remains difficult to give them meaning beyond pure entertainment.

During this workshop, you’ll be introduced to our educational toolkit Decoding JV – Learning with Video Games, designed to help people grasp the language of video games while having fun. Through 10 ready-to-use activities, participants explore the mechanics of video games, their cultural representations, and the messages they convey — all in an intuitive and playful way.

Using thematic cards, they break down the key components of a game: from character design to storytelling, including the social and cultural issues embedded within. These cards pull back the curtain on what’s behind the screen: representations, gameplay mechanics, messages… and much more. For example: “Can you dodge in Mario?” or “What exactly is playfulness?” — questions that open up discussion, challenge preconceived notions, and invite collective reflection. Fun, accessible, and insightful, this tool offers participants — whether teachers, cultural facilitators, teenagers, or simply the curious — the means to better understand the role of video games in contemporary society and learn how to look at them differently.
